Chinese New Year celebrated with gusto

The Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas was filled with colour and festivity as the Hokkien Association of Brunei Darussalam hosted its annual Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration yesterday evening.

Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong was the guest of honour. The celebration began with speeches by the association’s Head of Education and Culture Datin Ti Li Chew; Vice Chairman Peng Yan Hoe in his capacity as the Chairman of the organising committee and welcoming remarks by Chairman of Hokkien Association Lim Han Chiong.

The chairman expressed gratitude to the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, where under the monarch’s wise leadership, Brunei citizens, residents and the nation continue to prosper and live in harmony.

“Let us all uphold His Majesty’s titah to practice and strengthen the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) to establish a peaceful and prosperous life in the Abode of Peace,” the chairman highlighted.

He also added that this will strengthen the Tionghua community’s appreciation towards MIB – which is the way of life in Brunei.

There were colourful stage performances, followed by the presentation of appreciation certificates, scholarships and academic excellence awards to 227 recipients, comprising of the association members’ children. Guests were treated to sumptuous food and entertained by a line-up of stage performances.

Some guests also walked home with lucky draw prizes.

The celebration, attended by 1,800 members, served as the association’s appreciation for the support given by its advisers and members over the years. The event was an opportunity for the Hokkien community to gather, enhance friendly ties and usher the new year together.
