Chinese delegation meets with religious leaders, new converts

Standing Committee Member of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Vice-Chairman of the Committee of Ethnic and Religious Affairs of CPPCC National Committee Quan Zhezhu yesterday met with representatives of religious leaders and new Muslim converts at the Emperor’s Court, Manggis Mall yesterday.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Yussof noted that Brunei Darussalam and the People’s Republic of China shared a common trait – diversity – in a peaceful and prosperous nation.

He said, in the Brunei context, under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, our diverse communities live in harmony with good understanding of each other’s religion and culture.

“We appreciate each other’s commonalities and acknowledge our differences and this event is an opportunity for Quan Zhezhu to mingle with our diverse community and to understand more about Brunei Darussalam,” Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz said. Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious) at the MoRA Haji Mohd Serudin bin Haji Timbang and senior officers from MoRA also attended.

During the meeting, representatives of religious leaders and new Muslim converts shared their life experiences with Quan Zhezhu and his delegation.

The event started with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Mosque Affairs Officer Ahmad Syafiq bin Haji Osman. There was also a Tausyeh performance by the Brunei Darussalam New Converts Association.

Quan Zhezhu was accompanied by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong.

During their stay, the delegation paid courtesy calls to Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong and Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman.

Quan Zhezhu also visited the Legislative Council building, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School in Kampong Katok; Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah; Arts and Handicraft Training Centre and Royal Regalia Museum.
