A TOTAL of BND53,445, including an athletic scholarship, was handed over to athletes, coaches and associations under the Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme (SPKS) in a ceremony yesterday.
The money and scholarship are meant as a reward for the athletes’ hard work and sacrifice in bringing glory to the country in international championships.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin presented the financial incentives to the recipients.
Kamarul Ariffin bin Haji Abdul Ghaffar received BND6,500 for winning two gold and two silver medals in the Micron Singapore World PARA Bowling Tour Series 2018 held in Singapore, while Muhammad Jamary bin Danggat went home with BND5,500 for bagging one gold medal and three silvers in the same championship.
Saidin bin Haji Damit received BND4,500 for achieving one gold, two silvers and one bronze at the Micron Singapore World PARA Bowling Tour Series 2018 in Singapore, while Khairul Anwar bin Haji Abdul Ghaffar received BND4,000 after taking home one gold, one silver and one bronze medal in the same competition.
Coach Ahmad Athery bin Haji Abdul Samad received BND4,100 while assistant coach Mohammad Aidil bin Jahali was presented with BND1,025. The Brunei Darussalam National Paralympics Council received BND4,100.
Hajah Amalia binti Haji Metali received BND7,000 for winning the silver medal in the lawn bowls singles event at the World Single Champion of Champions 2016 in Queensland, Australia.
Abdul Rahman bin Haji Omar received BND4,000 after clinching the bronze medal in the singles event for the same competition.
Ampuan Ahad bin Ampuan Kasim and Pengiran Haji Tengah bin Pengiran Haji Tajuddin each received BND3,000 for their silver medal showing in the men’s pairs event at the 12th Asian Lawn Bowl Championship 2017 in New Delhi, India. Their coach, Lokman bin Haji Md Salleh, received BND1,200, while the National Lawn Bowling Association received BND1,200.
National wushu athlete Muhammad Sufi Shayiran bin Roslan meanwhile was presented with an athletic scholarship to further his studies at Universiti Brunei Darussalam worth BND2,120.
In her speech at the incentive presentation, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil said the SPKS “aims to reward national athletes in recognition and in appreciation of their success in bringing glory for the country on the international stage, and is also meant as a show of appreciation towards the coaches and associations”.
