The High Court on Monday dismissed a local man’s appeal for his jail sentence from two charges of theft to be concurrent, seeing no merit in the appeal.

Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong found Abdul Aziz bin Haji Aji @ Haji Ali holding a bad record and saw his appeal against a five-year-and-four-month jail sentence in no way severe and dismissing it.

Abdul Aziz complained in the High Court that the sentence of two years and eight months handed to him, to run consecutively, was excessive and should instead be run concurrently.

CCTV footage caught Abdul Aziz shoplifting from hardware stores twice in a week in August, 2020.

“The appellant is a career thief who re-offends repeatedly and has a previous record of 30 theft-related charges, from 1991 to 2014,” said the Chief Justice.

The Public Prosecutor, represented by Prosecutors Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli and Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad, responded to the appeal.
