Morris Garages (MG), which was first introduced to the Brunei market in late 2018, appears to have two distributors in the country, with each given the right to import and distribute its line of vehicles.
According to GHK Motors Sdn Bhd Managing Director Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin, a certificate of authorised distribution from Shanghai Automobile International Company (SAIC) Motor Corporation Ltd stated that MG has certified the car dealer to be the sole importer and distributor, as well as after-sales service provider, in the country.
“The global MG Distributors website also listed GHK Motors Sdn Bhd as the distributor for Brunei Darussalam,” he said. “I hope the authorities will look into this matter as issues regarding after-sales services have been raised.”
Meanwhile, Teng Chee Kiong, who is Managing Director at the other MG distributor Premier Motors Sdn Bhd, said it is extremely rare for a small country such as Brunei to have two distributors for one car brand.
However, he also expressed support for such a move as “it gives customers more choices… it all depends on the (car) manufacturer’s strategy”.
