Cannons heralded in the new Islamic year of 1443 Hijrah with 21 blasts echoing around the compound of Jame’ Asr Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque yesterday.
Ongoing COVID-19 restrictions have prevented the traditional Islamic holiday from its usual gatherings and observations at mosques, suraus and religious halls.
However, Muslims were urged to observe the passing of the new year – which celebrated the migration of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) from Makkah to Madinah – with prayers at home.
The cannons rang out before the call for Maghrib prayer. Mosques, suraus and religious halls nationwide recited Doa Akhir dan Awal Tahun Hijrah using
loud speakers.
The theme of the 1443 Hijrah celebration is ‘Knowledgeable and Pious Youth, Catalyst for a Blessed Nation’ which encourages Muslims to take on a positive attitude.
