Young people and students around the world are now being seen as large contributors to the continued spread of COVID-19, due to being unvaccinated and highly mobile in the community.
Many are asymptomatic and unknowingly spread the virus to friends, family members and the wider community.
Singapore has put extra measures in place to cut transmission risks at schools and higher educational institutions, where they have had a number of cases over the last few months. All staff, students and cleaners, particularly in secondary schools and higher educational institutions, were highly encouraged to get vaccinated, and the uptake has been high.
With vaccinations approved for 12 to 17-year-olds, many parents were keen for their children to be inoculated and the registration has been strong. Students in Singapore, who are not yet vaccinated, undergo twice-weekly rapid antigen tests.
With young people being highly mobile in the community, both during and after school and engaged in activities such as extra tuition, music classes and out-of-school curriculum, perhaps the local authorities could consider prioritising some of these measures, which could be important towards fighting this highly-transmissible and fast moving virus.
People should also consider the responsibility during the outbreak by using the QR code system, wearing masks, washing hands, using correct etiquette for coughing and sneezing, and limiting their social contact footprint.

No safety measures at certain tuck shops
Convenient stores are among the most frequented places since the return of local COVID-19 transmissions in the country.
However, some of these tuck shops still have no QR codes displayed at the entrance or hand sanitisers for their customers, making these premises a health risk to all.
It is made worse by the fact that these stores are often quite packed with items and the aisles too narrow for more than one person. Thus, the risk of contracting the virus is so much higher.
