Call for transparency on national development

Since the start of the 19th Legislative Council (LegCo) session, I have been following the discussions with interest. The one thing that has been brought up repeatedly is Brunei Vision 2035.

Frankly, while the national vision itself is not unfamiliar; we have 12 years to meet the goals stated in the Vision. Yet, I know very little about what various ministries have done thus far to get us closer to these goals.

More importantly, what would happened if our country failed to realise the Vision? Where are we now in terms of our progress towards these aspirations? What can we the public do to help our country in realising its vision? What have the authorities done thus far to encourage the public to work side-by-side with all stakeholders in inching us closer to the Vision?

I would like to call on the authorities to release respective yearly reports through press conferences, to help us understand the importance of the initiatives undertaken, how far along they are in achieving the objectives of these projects, the metrics employed to measure the performance of their human resources, and the set of challenges faced along the way.

In other words, it would be good to see more transparency and openness in the public sector to allow us a better grasp on the achievements and struggles in attaining these Vision goals. Perhaps it would also encourage more public participation in nation-building because we feel more engaged in the journey.
