I have heard some concerning rumours regarding the so called National Animal Shelter for Strays. The rumours alleged that for some time now, animals, particularly dogs, at the shelter have not been given adequate care and many have supposedly died.
Stray dogs and other animals are a fixture in our daily lives. Inevitably, if we cross paths with them on a regular basis, we may find ourselves offering bits of food or more personal contact with them, even though we are not able to offer them permanent homes.
Some people will see them as nuisances, but others, moved by compassion, cannot help but care for our animal friends in the very little ways we believe can help them. In this sense, animal shelters provide a middle ground, providing refuge for stray animals while ensuring they do not get in the way of others, as well as perhaps an opportunity for them to find a home in the future.
So when rumours about our animal friends being inadequately treated flies around social media, then it is emotionally disturbing.
We want to know they are doing well, that they are given care as their only misfortune was to be born in a world dominated by humans.
We hope that the official government animal shelter can make clear several things. The circumstances and welfare of the animals being cared for, animals that are available for adoption, the adoption process and ensuring the adoptees are suitable to care for animals as well as whether or not they require any form of assistance.
