Call for random spot checks to catch labour violators

I would like to respond to a news article that appeared in the Bulletin on July 3, regarding an employer getting into trouble for multiple labour violations.

I applaud the authorities for clamping down on these companies for overlooking the basic rights of their staff, especially forcing them to work without rest days.

I hope the news would go around that errant business practices are not tolerated, because there are quite a lot of companies out there that blatantly ignore labour law.

The sad fact is that it is not just foreign workers that are subject to these mistreatments; locals with low-paying jobs are often forced to work from Monday to Sunday, with no breaks in between.

Perhaps it is high time that the authorities conduct surprise spot checks on random businesses. While public complaints are a way to learn about labour violations, there are more people out there who choose to keep mum of their working conditions for the fear of losing their source of income.

Flabbergasted
