My late father passed away earlier this year. He was a foreigner, who came to Brunei and started his career in construction at the age of 18. In 1990, he established a construction company with a local partner, and had delivered thousands of projects that contributed to bettering the country’s infrastructure and public spaces.
While the law is clear on the fact that no foreigners could own a business, we are also denied shares of the company.
The company was the fruit of our late father’s labour, and to see it being “given away” to someone on the basis that we are not local seems to make light of his contribution to the country. We want to see the country we call home flourish. Perhaps it is high time that the laws be revised to make way for people, both locals and foreigners, to help the country realise the national vision for 2035.
