Comparative literature is a discipline that studies literature not only by seeing the similarities and differences, but by examining the uniqueness and elements contained in it.

Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) Acting Director cum guest of honour Suip bin Haji Abdul Wahab noted this during the 22nd Mastera Comparative Literature Lecture Series 2019 for the Mastera Brunei Darussalam, held at the DBP yesterday. The event is held by the Southeast Asia Literacy Council (Mastera).

Suip, who is also the Acting Chairman of Mastera Brunei Darussalam, highlighted that the lecture shares comparative knowledge that offers attendees a more in-depth research on the comparison between sejarah sastera and sastera sejarah.

He hoped the lecture would enrich knowledge on the discipline of comparative literature, and at the same time, boost interest among the younger generation to produce research and comparative literature research to enrich the regional Malay literature.

Facilitator of the Mastera Comparative Literature Lecture 2019 Dr Noridah binti Kamari from Mastera Singapore delivered a lecture on Yang Terlepas Tersisih dan Terasing: Kajian Bandingan Penulisan Sejarah Sastera di Nusantara, which discussed historical literature in the context of comparative literature that tends to move towards ‘Eurosentrisme.’
