    Cable theft case for trial

    A local trio on Monday claimed trial to a set of charges alleging them of theft and mischief.

    Amin bin Haji Johara, 45, Muhammad bin Haji Usli, 46, and Awangku Zunidi bin Pengiran Othman, 37, face two charges under section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22 for committing theft and under Section 427, Chapter 22 of the Penal Code for mischief for causing damage to property.

    Prosecutor Syafina Abdul Hadzid alleged the three defendants, and another person still at large, to have stolen 120 metres of copper cables belonging to United National Networks Sdn Bhd and causing wrongful damage in the course of theft sometime between May 10 and 11 at Jalan Kasat, Putat, Kampong Lupak Luas, in Lumapas.

    The offence of theft under section 379, Chapter 22 of the Penal Code carries a penalty of imprisonment sentence of no more than three years, a fine or both. While section 427, Chapter 22 of the Penal Code, for causing damage to property carries penalty of an imprisonment not exceeding five years and whipping of no less than two strokes.

    Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid adjourned the case to July 12 for trial dates to be fixed.
