CAIRO (XINHUA) – At least 12 people dead and five others wounded when a bus crashed with a lorry in Egypt’s Minya Province, a security official source told Xinhua yesterday.
The accident took place in the early morning due to the high speed of the drivers, the source said.
He added that it’s not the first time for an accident to happen because the road is broken and needs urgent maintenance.
Seven ambulances were rushed to the scene and the injured were transferred to six hospitals, he said, noting that one wounded person is in critical conditions.
Minya Province locates around 245km south of capital Cairo.
Daily road accidents are common in Egypt due to poorly maintained road infrastructure and loosely applied traffic regulations.
“Egypt loses about 12,000 lives due to road traffic crashes every year,” said a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2018, which stated that about 1.3 million people die annually on the world’s roads.
