The High Court on Monday sentenced a local man to two years and six months’ jail, along with three strokes of the cane, for taking his cousin’s car and sleeping child on a bumpy ride.
Muhammad Firdaus bin Mohamad Salleh, 24, pleaded guilty to the charges of acting in a manner so rash which endangers life, while driving; and mischief, by causing damage.
Justice Haji Abdullah Soefri bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin heard from Prosecutor Hajah Atiyyah Azzahra binti Pehin Dato Haji Abas that the defendant was at a relative’s house at RPN Kampong Rimba on November 2, 2019.
When the defendant’s cousin and wife arrived, they left their sleeping child in the car with the engine running.
The defendant then took the car intending to take the child out for a spin. As he drove off, his cousin and father pursued him in another car.
Realising that he was being followed, the defendant drove to the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) Base in Rimba.
Guards and personnel immediately became aware of the situation, closed the gates, and pursued the defendant.
The defendant attempted to escape by ramming into the closed gates several times. After knocking down the gates and damaging two parked cars, the defendant headed for another relative’s house in Bebatik Kilanas.
En route, he nearly hit another car, whose driver realised that the defendant was being pursued.
The driver tailed the defendant to the relative’s house and blocked the driveway to stop him from leaving, before calling the police.
The police rushed to the scene and arrested the defendant.
The damages to the gates were calculated to be over BND8,000.
