BRUNEI Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) organised a tree planting activity in line with their commitment to protect the environment as well as to support Brunei Darussalam’s efforts in promoting environmental sustainability on Thursday.

It was also to recognise the importance of sustainable management of the natural environment being a key part to the sustainability of human development.

The group led by the Exploration and Technical Services Geophysics (TSG) Department team planted 200 trees along the surrounding area of the J18 area, next to STKRJ, Lorong Tiga Selatan, Seria.

The initiative conducted as part of the ‘I AM BSP’ mindset, serves to encourage the collaboration of those under different disciplines within the company, as well as those from outside of the company.

The Central Forestry Nursery under the Forestry Department at Sungai Liang supplied two types of trees – Penaga Laut (Calophyllum Inophyllum) and Ketapang (Terminalia Catappa) – both which have been identified to have a huge value in biodiversity for reforestation in the area, according to the environmental tree-planting framework.

“We should make it as natural to give back to nature as it is to take nature for granted. Trees mitigate global warming, encourage rainfall, reduce air pollution and increase biodiversity, and so playing a small part in this makes a real impact to the environment, in addition to simply having fun doing an activity together as a team building initiative,” said BSP Exploration Manager Gijs Holstege, who also leads the team that progress environmental initiatives within BSP.

The team has adopted the environment as one of their health and safety commitments with members diverting their attention to environmental protection.

The activity represented one of many initiatives by the department in areas of environmental protection coinciding with the year-long ‘90 Acts of Kindness’ project in commemoration of BSP’s 90th anniversary.
