The BSB Indian Association held a cultural programme to mark the Pongal Festival of India at the Main Conference Hall of the International Convention Centre in Berakas last Sunday.
High Commissioner of India to Brunei Darussalam Ajaneesh Kumar was the guest of honour.
Around 600 people attended including YMRM Chairman Ramesh J B as well as representatives from Progresif Sdn Bhd, Baiduri Bank and other sponsors.
Several executive and management committee members of the BSB Indian Association including President Ravichandran and Vice President Mubarak were also present. The event began with the recitation of Surah
Al-Fatihah followed by the singing of Brunei’s national anthem and welcoming remarks by Chairman of Pongal Vizha and General Secretary of the BSB Indian Association N Murugesan in his capacity as head of the organising subcommittee.
It proceeded with the felicitation by the President of BSB Indian Association and the High Commissioner. Ravichandran shared about Pongal Festival’s background, noting that Pongal, which means ‘boiling over’ or ‘spill over’ is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamilians around the world and is traditionally dedicated to the nature, farmers and supporting animals.
“It is our duty and responsibility to support the farmers and agriculture and also to encourage our youth to participate in agricultural developments,” said the president.
The High Commissioner highlighted that India is a land of diverse cultures. He added that agriculture constitutes a major economic activity of the Indian society and also extended his greetings to the Indian community on the occasion.
The event also showcased Indian cultural stage performances.
