FIVE Bruneian sailors from the Brunei Sailing Team participated in the 20th edition of the Kota Kinabalu City Day Regatta organised by Kinabalu Yacht Club recently.
The sailors comprising Nasiruddin Harun, Jeremiah Ethan Tan, A’lia Kaiyisha Abdullah, Fadzlin Hassan and Md Hanafee bin Haji Abdul Latip were accompanied by Team Manager Alan Tan and Technical Coach Hassan Salleh.
Nasiruddin bagged the silver medal in the Overall Laser Category with Fadzlin and Jeremiah also enjoying podium finishes.
Nasiruddin finished strongly in the first day of the Overall Laser Category and Laser Radial Class to lead the fleet and took top spot. His compatriot Jeremiah recorded a DNF in race 2 after a broken rudder, which slid him down to fifth in the Overall Laser Category, and second in the Laser Radial Class.
A’lia Kaiyisha, sailing the Optimist, endured a tough challenge against 20 other participants from Malaysian teams and finished in 11th place in the Overall Optimist Category and fifth in the Optimist Division B Class.
Fadzlin and Md Hanafee took part in the Phantom 295 Category which saw Fadzlin finishing third and Hanafee having to retire after suffering a broken mast.
The second day started with north easterly winds blowing 12-15 knots making all the sailors eager to get into the water to complete the final three races.
Nasiruddin came in second place in the Overall Laser Category and first in the Laser Radial Class while Jeremiah was ranked fourth in Overall Laser Category and third in the Laser Radial Class.
In the Optimist, A’lia Kaiyisha finished 13th in the Overall Optimist Category and fifth in the Optimist Division B Class.
Meanwhile, in the Phantom 295 Category, Hanafee managed to find a spare mast and clawed his way back to finish the final three races of the event. Fadzlin finished third while Hanafee placed fourth in the category.
