Brunei wushu athletes strike gold again

The Brunei Wushu Team added two gold medals to their overall tally in the second day of the International Virtual Wushu Championship 2020 organised by the Indonesian Wushu Association (PBWI) yesterday.

National athletes Basma Lachkar and Hosea Wong Zheng Yu bagged the gold medal in the girls’ and boys’ taijijian Group ‘A’ events. Basma outscored her opponent Puteri Graciela of Yasanis with 9.29 points while her national compatriot Hosea Wong tallied 9.36 points ahead of Jevon Lionel Koeswoyo of Yasani who settled for silver with 9.10 points.

The Southeast Asian (SEA) Games medallists emerged victorious in the taijiquan events on the opening day of the competition. Walid Lachkar secured the silver medal in the boys’ daoshu Group ‘A’ event after he recorded 9.12 points.

The team also bagged two bronze through Abel Lim Wee Yuan and Lim Wei Jun in the boys’ daoshu Group ‘B’ and boys’ daoshu Group ‘C’ events.

Brunei’s Abel Lim scored 8.71 points behind Kenneth Christovani Wijaya of Wushu Rajawali Sakti and Derrius Tan Jun Kai of Wufang Singapore. Meanwhile, Lim Wei Jun tallied 8.44 points behind gold medallist Richard Dean Kurnia of Laba Laba Sakti and Rainer Mahidin of Wushu Rajawali Sakti.

Brunei wushu coach Lim Hui said, “The game ended smoothly, and the performance of the players was very good. Although affected by the pandemic, the players have been training persistently and are now resuming training. I hope that next year’s SEA Games will have good results.”

Six athletes from Brunei Darussalam are participating in the international virtual meet.
