Brunei Darussalam’s weightlifter Abdul Malik Al Mukkaramah bin Haji Mohd Yusof made his country proud after winning the gold medal in the men’s under-80kg category in the Asia Pacific Deadlift Championships 2020 at the Solitude of Strength in Singapore recently.

Compatriot Abdul Hakim bin Haji Mohd Yusof also contributed to the weightlifting map after a successful attempt in 250kg earned him a bronze medal in the same weight category.

Abdul Malik, who competed under the Brunei Darussalam National Weightlifting Association with Abdul Hakim, also nearly surpassed the Asian record of 300kg after he made a successful attempt on 270kg.

Organised by Strongman Singapore, the Asia Pacific Singapore is the first of its kind to include a ranking system of all the athletes in the ASEAN and Asia Pacific region. The competition was open to all ASEAN member countries and in the Asia Pacific region including Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, China, India and Pacific Islands.

Eighteen participated in the under-80kg category. This year’s edition also witnessed competitors taking part in mixed juniors, masters and adaptive classes in an effort to make the sport more inclusive and grow even further.

President of the Brunei Darussalam National Weightlifting Association Harun bin Haji Ahmad greeted the duo on arrival at the Brunei International Airport.
