BRUNEI Darussalam’s veteran basketball teams will compete in the first-ever Malaysia International Veteran Basketball Championship from March 25-30 at the MABA Basketball Stadium and UCSI University.

They will face teams from Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan and China. The Brunei Basketball Association (BBA) will field teams in the Men 40’s and 50’s categories.

BBA Men 40’s team will be led by former national coach Wong Yee Chai, while the 50’s team will be led by coach Goh Tee Hock.

The 40’s team received a boost for the competition after receiving the sponsorship of tea jersey from Low San Hardware. Coach Wong received the jerseys from Vincent Ong of Low San Hardware.

“While most expenses of the trip are self-funded by the players, we are grateful for the sponsorship from Low San Hardware and other sponsors which go towards the cost of the jersey and registration fees,” said Coach Wong.

“Our players, who may have passed their prime at basketball, are still keen to participate in the championship, all for the love of the game.”

Prior to the jersey hand-over, the national team edged Media and Friends 48-50 in a friendly game. Despite the slow start in the first quarter, Media team managed to come back from trailing eight points early in the match to close the gap to only by two points at the end of the first quarter 14-12. The national veteran team extended their lead in the remaining quarters and held on for the win.

“With better experience, the national squad managed to pull away thanks to the point and shooting guards Tan Wei Ghee and Lim Fung in the final quarter. Both players were in good shooting shape,” Wong said.
