Brunei taekwondoins win big at Borneo Cup in Kuching

A CONTINGENT of 11 athletes competed in the Sarawak Chief Minister Borneo Cup International Tournament (WTF) Championship 2019 in Kuching, Sarawak last weekend, with six in the Kyorugi events while the others in individual and pair poomsae events.

The contingent was accompanied by Brunei’s national coaches – Coach Nurul Hannah binti Abdul Mateen Kim @ Byung Hee Kim and Coach Jeon Bae Jeong, and team manager Haji Ismadey bin Haji Hussin from the Brunei Darussalam Taekwondo Association (BDTA) and ZeroOneEight MMA Academy. Pow Yin Khong from BDTA and Hybrid Martial Arts Academy was also invited as an international referee for the championship.

Brunei team emerged victorious with a haul of eight medals with four from Poomsae events and four from Kyorugi. In poomsae, Hyde Nachman Hijium and Hyde Nathania Hijium won gold in Senior under 30 Pair Poomsae event in addition to their respective one bronze medal each in the Senior under 30 Individual Poomsae event, whereas Awangku Md Rafedi Adi Hamizul bin Pengiran Nasir also snatched one bronze for Junior under 18 Individual Poomsae event.

In Kyorugi, in the final fight against Malaysia in the lightweight category, Mohd Yazid bin Mohd Taib proved the victor by winning gold, whereas Muhammad Ameerul Solehen bin Haji Mohammad Kasim managed to snatch silver in the middle 80–87kg category. Nursyafiqah binti Sahar also grabbed one silver medal against Thailand in the 57–58kg category, while Muhammad Hafiy Izuddin bin Haji Zaini managed a bronze against Malaysia in the Middle 68–73kg category.

Coach Nurul Hannah was awarded the Best Coach (Female) Award at the championship.

The championship also saw participation from almost 600 players from 20 countries worldwide, such as Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan, Nepal, India and Iran.

BDTA hopes that with this kind of achievement, it will help to further motivate the players to keep improving their skills in taekwondo and also prepare them for more future championships, such as the upcoming Brunei Open Taekwondo Championship at the end of August 2019.
