The ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM) was held yesterday at the International Convention Centre, chaired by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Shahril Anwar bin Haji Ma’awiah, in his capacity as the ADSOM Leader of Brunei Darussalam.
The virtual meeting saw senior defence officials of ASEAN member states participating in their capacity as ADSOM Leaders. Also present virtually was newly appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Political-Security Community for 2021-2024 Robert Matheus Michael Tene.
The ADSOM continues the momentum of defence cooperation and endorses further the work which began with the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting Working Group (ADSOM WG) on February 2-3 and the second ADSOM WG on March 22-23.
Eight papers, including a stocktaking paper, six concept papers and one discussion paper, were discussed and subsequently endorsed by ADSOM for approval and notation by the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM).
The ADSOM also endorsed Brunei Darussalam’s stocktaking paper, paving the way for a strategy paper for the future of ADMM be produced in due course. The ADSOM also endorsed the recommendation by the ADSOM WG to continue with the annual ADMM-Plus. A representative from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) also shared the outcomes of the 18th ASEAN Chiefs of Defence Forces’ Meeting (ACDFM).
As ASEAN Chair 2021, Brunei will chair the ADMM via video teleconference on June 15.
