BRUNEI Darussalam Schools Sports Council (MSSSBD) under the Ministry of Education will compete in the 11th ASEAN School Games (ASG) in Semarang, Indonesia from July 17-25.
A flag handing ceremony was held at the Lecture Hall of the Sports School yesterday. Acting Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh presented the national flag to the Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education Mohammad Jais bin Haji Abdul Rahman as the Chef de Mission.
Thirty-six athletes and 18 officers will take part in six sports events – badminton, athletics, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis and pencak silat.
“The MSSSBD hopes that through this participation, it will help develop the athletes’ development, exposure and experience to prepare them to represent Brunei Darussalam in future international games,” Mohammad Jais said.
“The athletes have undergone programmes including for mental toughness, confidence level, concentration and physical endurance.”
The athletes comprise students from several secondary schools and private schools who have participated in sports festivals organised by Department of Co-Curriculum Education and national sports associations.
“Based on the contingent’s performance during their intensive training sessions, they are targetting at least five medals in the tournament. We hope MSSSBD will prevail and bring glory,” the chef de mission added.
Brunei Darussalam through MSSSBD have been participating in the ASEAN School Games since 2009 and have amassed one gold, 12 silver and 23 bronze medals from 2009 to 2018, from netball, golf, athletics, pencak silat, sepak takraw and wushu.
