Seventy members of Brunei-Muara Senior Citizens Activity Centre and 11 government officials are participating in a sign language workshop at the Community Hall of Jalan 77, Kampong Lambak Kanan.

Held in conjunction with the International Day of Older Persons, the workshop is organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) through the Community Development Department (JAPEM) in collaboration with the National Association for the Hearing-Impaired.

Deputy Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Saidah binti Haji Wahid as the guest of honour officiated the opening ceremony yesterday.

Acting Head of the People with Different Abilities Division of JAPEM Dayangku Dewi Kartika Putri binti Pengiran Shahminan said learning sign language is often perceived as difficult but it can be overcome with motivation, adding that learning sign language is beneficial and the knowledge should be shared.

The guest of honour later witnessed the singing of national anthem Allah Peliharakan Sultan by the participants using sign language. The workshop will run until tomorrow.
