THE Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry will cooperate with the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications to issue fuel economy regulation for the use of fuel efficient vehicles in Brunei Darussalam. This regulation is expected to be introduced in 2023 and will be enforced in stages.
Minister of Energy, Manpower and Industry Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Mohd Hussein was responding to questions raised by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Iswandy bin Ahmad on using more environmental friendly vehicles.
The minister added that the enforcement of phase one is by 2025 and phase two is by 2030.
He said, “The Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry is working with the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications towards the use of electric vehicles in Brunei Darussalam including the recommendation of pilot project to bring in electric vehicle this year to achieve at least 10 per cent of electric vehicles by 2035.”
The minister disclosed, “As many as 1,960 hybrid vehicles and fuel efficient vehicles have been registered in the country since 2012. We were able to save BND1.44 million of fuel subsidies and reduced the release of 4,361 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide.”
With the saving in fuel subsidies and reduction in release of carbon dioxide, he said, “it will give a positive effect to the economy and environment.”
