Awards for participating hotels and restaurants for Brunei Gastronomy Week 2019 were presented yesterday during the launching of Brunei Gastronomy Week 2020.
Brunei Gastronomy Week is an annual initiative by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) since 2017 to highlight Bruneian cuisines in creative and innovative ways and for the public and tourists to experience Bruneian cuisines. The award for Best Taste went to The Rizqun International Hotel, while the Best Presentation award went to The Horizons Seafood Restaurant, Royal Brunei Catering (RBC). The Most Creative award went to The Brunei Hotel and the Most Innovative award went to Radisson Hotel Brunei. Eco Ponies Garden was named the recipient in the Most Wholesome category.
Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ali bin Haji Apong presented the awards during an event at the MPRT building in Jalan Menteri Besar.
According to Best Taste award recipient Chef Rizal of The Rizqun International Hotel, Brunei Gastronomy Week is a great opportunity to produce new menus and use ingredients and methods which may not be known to diners. “It is a learning experience for young chefs to understand traditional recipes and ways of cooking.
“It allows them to innovate and create new dishes from traditional cuisines and present them in a different manner,” he said.
One of the founders of the Most Wholesome awardee Eco Ponies Garden Eyon Ukoi said that community involvement was the mainstay of their winning project last year.
“The community was part of the project, they collect ingredients from the jungles and their own gardens and each of them came up with their traditional dishes.” Chef at Horizons Seafood Restaurant Nuramalia binti Abdul Rahman who was awarded for Best Presentation said that her inspiration mostly came from social media and this is where she incorporated her own ideas. The chef with over seven years of experience with RBC encouraged aspiring chefs to be bold and try new things.
The Radisson Hotel Brunei expressed its appreciation for being awarded the Most Innovative. “This achievement underlines that we believe anything is possible for our team. Our culinary workforce is driven by voices of people from different backgrounds and aspirations, so we strive to create a place where everyone can express their authentic selves through our innovative dishes.”
