A reception dinner was held at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall of The Empire Hotel & Country Club to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China yesterday.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin was the guest of honour.
Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong, in a welcoming speech, highlighted that friendship between China and Brunei has developed at an accelerated pace and full of vitality. She noted several state visits to Brunei and China for various events including His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s attendance in the second Belt and Road Forum in April this year for the International Cooperation in Beijing.
The envoy also highlighted Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ visit to China for the completion ceremony of the new memorial park of the Tomb of the King of Boni in China’s Nanjing city, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Brunei in 2018, the 16th China-Brunei diplomatic consultation in Beijing, Brunei’s Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports’ attendance in May for the Asian Civilisation Conference in Beijing and meeting with Chinese Minister of Culture and Tourism Luo Shugang as well as Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s meeting with Brunei’s Minister of Foreign Affairs II DDato Seri Setia Awang Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof in Bangkok.
The ambassador also noted that China-Brunei’s trade volume grew by 86 per cent in 2018, the growth rate ranking first among that of ASEAN member countries. Yu also spoke of the largest China-Brunei cooperative project – Hengyi Petrochemical Project, which will bring Brunei its first large-scale petrochemical project and accelerate Brunei’s economic diversification efforts, as well as the opening of the Brunei National Pavilion in JD.com which is one of the largest e-commerce platform in China.
The reception also saw a cake-cutting ceremony by the guest of honour along with the ambassador and spouse. Guests were entertained with a preview of the ‘Night of Chinese Cultural Tourism with Wushu and Taiji performance’. The performance will also be held at Jerudong Park Amphitheatre tonight for the public hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Tourism of China and the Chinese Embassy to kick-start the China-Brunei Tourism Year which will be held next year.
