    Brunei-Australia ties bolstered with appointment of business champion

    Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently appointed Sydney-based Dr Nur Rahman as Australia’s business champion for Brunei Darussalam to help strengthen two-way trade and investment links between the two countries.

    The appointment came amid the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit’s strong focus on strengthen economic partnerships between Australia and ASEAN, as a means of ensuring the region’s people have access to better and higher paying jobs amid significant transformations in the global economy.

    Dr Nur Rahman is one of 10 Australian business champions appointed for Southeast Asia. His appointment was one of many initiatives under Australia’s Southeast Asia economic strategy – Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

    Business champions have been appointed to facilitate greater commercial links between Australia and Brunei, including by facilitating the development of stronger business networks and making recommendations for increasing two-way investment.

    With his leadership expertise, understanding of Australian and Brunei businesses and commercial acumen, Dr Nur Rahman is well placed to provide insights, advice and connections to support businesses in both countries to unlock new opportunities.

    He has met with Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah to advance the agenda.

    Dr Nur Rahman has many years of business experience across a range of industries including retail, manufacturing and food. He was the chief excutive officer of Ghanim International Corporation for eight years and was instrumental in developing Brunei’s halal manufacturing capacity and global halal food brand. He is currently the CEO of Pristine Pacific, an agrifood consulting company in Australia.

    In addition to the appointment of Dr Nur Rahman, the Australian High Commission in Brunei Darussalam has also engaged an Australian diplomat, First Secretary Janice Ho, to drive the implementation of the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 in Brunei. It also plans to hire an investment officer to further bolster the team.
