A TOTAL of 30 educators, lecturers, writers and students attended a literary appreciation event organised by the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) on the sidelines of the ongoing Brunei Book Fair 2019 yesterday.
Headlined Bedah Karya, the event was divided into two sessions for the discussion and assessment of literary works by renowned Bruneian writers. The first session focussed on the novel Sa.b.a! by DBP Officer and 2015 SEA Write Award recipient Haji Abdul Aziz bin Tuah under the pen name of Jabit Abdul Aziz.
The guest presenter was Dr Chong Ah Fok, a local literary figure who has been writing novels since 1985.
Dr Chong is also actively involved in the Tutong District Arts and Cultural Body (B2K), and is currently the Deputy Principal at St Andrew’s School. Meanwhile, the second session focussed on a collection of poems by Maya Brunei or Haji Jamaluddin bin Aspar, a 2016 SEA Write Award recipient who also produces short stories and scripts for dramas and plays.
The session was presented by Brunei Darussalam MASTERA (Southeast Asia Literature Council) member, writer and literary critic Dr Haji Morsidi bin Haji Muhammad, who is also a part-time lecturer at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB).
The Bedah Karya event is part of the Pantaran Sastera Project, a monthly programme carried out under the DBP’s Literature and Magazine Section for the in-depth discussion and evaluation of works in Malay Literature, in addition to serving as a gathering point for students, writers and literature enthusiasts.
