The Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered a 34-year-old Indonesian man to settle a BND8,300 fine after he pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Riyono Meseni would have to serve eight months’ jail in default of payment.
Magistrate Dewi Norlelawati binti Haji Abdul Hamid heard from the Customs prosecutor that the defendant was detained when customs preventive officers found 11 cartons and 15 sticks of smuggled cigarettes of various brands in the defendant’s work quarters at Kampong Badas in Seria on February 21 at 12.42am.
The court also ordered the cigarettes to be destroyed.
