A local man found to have in possession smuggled cigarettes at home was ordered to settle a BND23,500 fine by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner ordered 28-year-old Ali Mahdi bin Suhaimi to serve 13 months’ jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to possession of 19 cartons and 118 packets of cigarettes of various brands.
The Customs prosecutor informed the court that preventive officers inspected the defendant’s house at Perumahan Lambak Kanan at 4.26pm on June 29, 2021.
The enforcement officers also found BND75 believed to be proceeds from illegal sales of the cigarettes. The money was confiscated.
