Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin said BND21.8 million has been allocated for the development of sports, including facilities and infrastructure, during the 10th day of the 17th Legislative Council session yesterday.
The minister said that some of the achievements include amending the 2015-2019 Sports Academy pilot programme to a new programme and amending the Southeast Asia (SEA) Sports Medal Programme to strengthen the ecosystem of high performance sports.
He said that they had targetted five high-performance sports and identified 20 potential athletes to undergo training programmes to improve performance, skills and abilities.
The minister said they are also reviewing the Sports Excellence incentive Scheme (SPKS) to adjust rewards, based on the sport. He also highlighted that the first Sports Scholarship, through the Special Scholarship Scheme, Ministry of Education went to Wushu athlete Basma binti Lachkar for further studies at Jerudong International School.
The scholarship is part of the National Sports Policy initiative and is an incentive for high achievements in sports and academic excellence.
The minister also highlighted e-athlete Mohd Zulkarnain bin Haji Mohd Zulkifli, who became a professional in Indonesia.
The minister said that they will improve the quality and performance of athletes, coaches and sport infrastructure through the establishment of the Brunei Institute of Sports and promote growth incentives for recreational sports and tourism industries.
