BND10,500 fine burns hole in vendor’s pocket

A 45-year-old local woman who stored smuggled cigarettes at a food stall at her home was ordered to settle a BND10,500 fine by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Magistrate Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu ordered Norhaini binti Haji Olang to serve 10 months’ jail in default of payment after she pleaded guilty to illegal possession of 129 packets of cigarettes at her food stall outside her house in RPN Kampong Meragang, Jalan Wasai Limuru.

Customs prosecutor Haji Mohamad Junaidi bin Haji Ahmad informed the court that customs preventive officers, acting on received intelligence, inspected the site and found the cigarettes at 3.45pm on June 7. The court ordered the seized cigarettes to be forfeited to the state.
