    BND1.6M in business zakat handed over to Islamic religious council

    Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and its subsidiaries handed over BND1,683,443.61 in business zakat and BND744,626.62 in zakat for customer deposits to the Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) yesterday.

    The business zakat was for the 2022 financial year while the zakat for customer deposits were for the period of April 25, 2022 to November 24, 2023.

    Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman received the zakat in his capacity as MUIB President.

    BIBD’s business zakat was handed over by BIBD Shariah Advisory Body Chairman Dr Abdul Nasir bin Haji Abdul Rani, who is also an associate professor and Director of the Centre for Graduate Studies at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali.

    Meanwhile, BIBD Managing Director and CEO Junaidi bin Haji Mastri handed over the zakat for the bank’s customer deposits.

    “One of the five pillars of Islam, zakat is a method of purifying and distributing wealth to those in need as stipulated by Shariah.

    “To facilitate Muslim customers fulfilling their obligations, BIBD has provided the convenience of paying zakat for their deposits at all branches nationwide,” said the bank in a statement.
