Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Motohiko Kato

ON BEHALF of the Government and people of Japan, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on His Majesty’s 73rd birthday.

On this joyous occasion, I would like to express my most profound esteem for the distinguished leadership of His Majesty which has brought peace and prosperity to Brunei, and I pledge to do my best to strengthen the ties between Japan and Brunei through various forms of economic and cultural cooperation as well as through people-to-people exchange.

Japanese people have been celebrating the beginning of a new era – Reiwa, meaning beautiful harmony – which marks the accession of our new Emperor. The excellent relations between Japan and Brunei are reflected in the relationship between the royal family of Brunei and the imperial family of Japan.

His Majesty the Emperor of Japan has maintained a strong friendship with His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah since attending his wedding in 2004 and I believe this new era will see ever closer ties between our two countries, and our two royal families.

As the Ambassador of Japan to Brunei Darussalam, I am determined to contribute to this strengthening of the bilateral relations between Japan and Brunei. I understand that His Majesty places great importance on the diversification of the country’s economy and, in terms of economic cooperation, Japanese companies continue to make great contributions, working in multiple sectors.

The launch of direct Royal Brunei Airlines flights between Tokyo and Bandar Seri Begawan means that these economic ties are now even easier to make and it generates new opportunities for tourism.

It also provides Bruneians with a convenient way to attend the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. Be assured that Bruneian athletes and spectators will receive a warm welcome from Japan. We regularly work with young Bruneian athletes through our various exchange programmes so that they can connect with their peers in Japan.

In this new era of beautiful harmony, I would like, once again, to offer my wholehearted congratulations and best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of His Majesty and all of the people of Brunei Darussalam.

Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Motohiko Kato
