THE Tamil Association under Indian Association of Belait (IAB) held a Thai Pongal celebration, a harvest festival, last Sunday.
More than 150 participants joined the celebration at the IAB main building in Seria. Several activities were held including a Tamil Book Fair and a feast.
Tamil Association Chairman Balakrishnan ‘Mohan’ Chandramohan said the Pongal celebration represents a significant day in the Tamil culture. The book fair is “one of the many platforms with which we can help educate the youth of the Tamil community on the importance of remembering the cultural significance of the Thai Pongal celebration”, he said.
The main draw of the celebration was the making of the Pongal dish which uses rice, milk and several ingredients for a sweet and savoury taste, and served on banana leaves.
During lunch time, guests feasted at a large table with banana leaves topped with rice and vegetable dishes and drinks.
