BRUNEI Basketball Association (BBA) presented a BND1,000 contribution to Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) during a Chinese New Year celebration reception at Mulia Hotel on Friday night.
Present at the reception were Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong and spouse, Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin, as well as President of BBA Kwang Ming Heng.
The contribution was handed over by Kwang Ming Heng to a member of the Board of Directors (Auditor) of CHMS BSB Chong Fu Li.
Highlighting local basketball achievements in the past year under BBA, organising Chairman Pong Seh Woei said, “Our national team achieved a few successes last year. I would like to congratulate our men’s team on winning the Borneo Intercity Championship last year and for the first time, our men’s team participated in the FIBA ASIA Cup qualifier where we had victory against Cambodia.”
Touching on the women’s team, he said, “We have seen tremendous improvements. It is heartening to see an increase number of active women players now, and I would like to acknowledge our coaches and players. I hope that the committee will continue to organise more women tournaments and workshop to further develop our women’s team.”
BBA also stressed on the importance of developing youth basketball players for the country.
“We have also invested in youth development programme. In 2018, we have sent Ruby Ang, one of our young table officials to the FIBA IBF Youth Leadership Programme. Her active participation and enthusiasm received a lot of commendation from FIBA officials. On her return, she organised a 3×3 competition and led the winning team to IBF 3×3 tournament held in Bali, Indonesia.”
Pong Seh Woei also commended the referee clinic held last year, as well as the under-20 basketball team competing in the Under-20 basketball friendly tournaments in Cambodia.
