MEMBER of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Ong Tiong Oh in the morning session of the Legislative Council meeting yesterday asked whether St Andrew’s School and St George’s School can be exempted from building tax.

He added that in 2013, three schools located in Bandar Seri Begawan namely Chung Hwa Middle School, St Andrew’s School and St George’s School were instructed to pay building tax amounting to BND61,280.

These schools are heavily dependant on monthly school fees. In a year, the average cost is BND2,500 per student. At the same time, school expenses reach nearly a million causing additional burden to the schools as they are non-profit organisations.

Yang Berhormat Ong thanked the Municipal Department for granting building tax exemption to Chung Hwa Middle School. He hoped that the same will apply for St Andrew’s School and St George’s School.

Minister of Home Affairs Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong said that the matter will need to be reviewed. If the regulations allow, it will be put under consideration.
