HARPER’S BAZAAR/AFP – There has always been a sense of futurism with Paco Rabanne.
The eponymous designer did, after all, make a name for himself during the Space Age by creating dresses made of chain mail and silver discs, materials that he himself deemed “unwearable”.
But that didn’t stop the masses from literally buying into the brand. The current Creative Director Julien Dossena, a man equally adept in innovation, has kept his vision alive. But for the fall 2020 season, instead of eyeing the skies, he mined the Dark Ages, a time synonymous with the legend of King Arthur.
This was reflected in the slinky chain mail separates that call to mind the armour of knights like Sir Lancelot, and long dresses with dainty floral prints and lace trimmings that drum up images of his paramour, Guinevere.
It was a clever way for Dossena to showcase chain mail in such a romantic, modern way. So in this regard, he certainly looked forward. — Barry Samaha
