MEMBERS of the Lions Club of Bandar Seri Begawan (Lions Club BSB) donated BND500 to the Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) Brunei Autism Centre for Adults (BACA) in Jalan Muara on Thursday.
Lions Club BSB President Sunil Ramchandani presented the cheque to CEO of SMARTER Brunei Malai Haji Abdullah bin Malai Haji Othman.
The club members were briefed on the centre’s activities and taken on a quick tour to observe the project areas and facilities at the centre.
Malai Haji Abdullah emphasised that the centre uses assistive devices to help autistic students to navigate their daily life activities. The centre’s goal is to teach students how to co- exist with family members at home and with the community.
The centre uses recycled material to create products that can be used as packaging material, Hari Raya gift cards and other reusable items, he added.
Sunil was delighted to collaborate with SMARTER BACA in raising awareness on recycling unwanted products and goods, by encouraging club members to donate used clothes and household equipment to the centre.
Malai Haji Abdullah thanked the Lions Club BSB for its generosity and expressed concern on making the centre sustainable, as donations have dwindled and the centre is barely staying afloat.
The Lions Club BSB is a member of Lions Club International, the largest service organisation in the world with 1.4 million members worldwide. The club is dedicated to serving the community through its five service areas namely: hunger, vision, environment, diabetes and paediatric cancer. However, in general the clubs motto is ‘We Care’ and it has been actively serving the community for the past 49 years since it was first established in November 1970.
