The Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday handed a four months’ jail sentence to a local woman for trespassing into government property.

Siti Nadiah binti Azmi, 31, pleaded guilty to the charge of trespassing into a flat house owned by Islamic Religious Council Brunei at Mumong Bypass in Kuala Belait at 4am on January 30.

The defendant started a fire in the property in order to get her boyfriend’s attention, who lives just below.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif found the case aggravated paired with the fact that the defendant had repeatedly trespassed into the property since 2022 and having started a fire in the property, which could have gone worse if it had not been extinguished by her boyfriend.

Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad revealed in court that the defendant lit a piece of polystyrene foam when she trespassed into the property and texted her boyfriend who lives just below.

On receiving the text from his girlfriend informing of the fire that she started, he rushed to the flat house above and extinguished the fire using a bucket of water he had collected from the bathroom.

He then quarrelled with the defendant causing her to flee the scene.

The man then lodged a police report and led to the defendant’s arrest.

Investigations unearthed that the defendant managed to repeatedly trespass into the property as it had been left unoccupied following the passing of the previous occupant.

The defendant only said that her action was to get her boyfriend’s attention.
