Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad yesterday called on national athletes competing in the upcoming 12th ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia to display competitive spirit to bring glory to the country.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi delivered his remarks during the national flag handover ceremony to the Bruneian contingent in the Para Games.

The minister said the selection of national athletes was a result of hard work and continued commitment in carrying out systematic training as well as the strong fighting spirit that was shown.

“It is hoped that such efforts will continue during the competition,” he said.

The minister reminded athletes to avoid using unidentified and prohibited substances that may cause disqualification or even suspension from competitions.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi also advised athletes to maintain health and discipline before and during competition.

“Athletes must always be focussed and have the right spirit to achieve victory, bring glory to the nation and make the country proud as well as create a history in the development of sports in the Sultanate,” he said.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, the ceremony chair, said the athletes have prepared for the 12th ASEAN Para Games by carrying out continuous training to ensure excellent performance levels.

“With the good preparation, it is hoped that the athletes will challenge contingents from other nations at the Games,” he said.

Brunei Darussalam is sending a 23-member contingent to this year’s ASEAN Para Games that will take place from June 3 to 9.

The contingent includes 12 athletes competing in badminton, athletic and swimming events at the prestigious regional competition.

Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi handed over the national flag to the Chef De Mission of Brunei’s contingent Haji Ali Yusri bin Haji Abdul Ghafor in a ceremony at the MCYS building.

Ambassador of Cambodia to Brunei Darussalam Lim Hokseng; Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the MCYS Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan; Permanent Secretary (Youth) at the MCYS Haji Zakaria bin Haji Serudin; and Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Hajah Norashikin binti Haji Johari also attended the ceremony along with government officials and the athletes’ parents. Brunei Darussalam began competing in the ASEAN Para Games in 2001.

The Sultanate has collected 37 gold, 41 silver and 58 bronze medals, with the best performance coming in 2009 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where Brunei captured nine gold, five silver and seven bronze.

In the 2022 ASEAN Para Games, Brunei took home one gold, one silver and three bronze.
