At least MYR168M needed for infrastructure repairs due to floods, says Johor exco member

ANN/THE STAR – The floods that hit Johor since March 1 have caused at least MYR168 million in damage to roads and infrastructure, said state exco member Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

The works, transportation and infrastructure committee chairman said the amount is expected to increase as floodwaters have yet to recede in some areas.

“The damaged infrastructure includes roads, water pipes, bridges, electrical cables and street lights, especially in Segamat, Batu Pahat and Muar, which were the worst hit.

“An early assessment by the state Public Works Department showed that MUR168 million is needed to conduct repairs and upgrades and the state government has submitted an application for the funds to the Federal Government.

“We will make another round of assessments after the floodwaters recede completely as some areas are still flooded,” he said yesterday.

Floods hit Johor on March 1 after continuous rain, causing up to 50,000 victims to seek shelter at temporary flood relief centres statewide so far.

Mohamad Fazli added that the electricity supply at affected areas had been completely restored.

“It is the main road that links Pekan Nanas in Pontian and Johor Baru as well as Woodlands, Singapore.

“The works included relocating utility facilities, soil treatment and road fixtures,” he added.
