ASEAN and the Republic of Korea (ROK) reaffirmed their commitment to forge closer ties and enhance cooperation at the 8th ASEAN-ROK Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting held via video-conference recently.
The meeting took note of the progress made in ASEAN-ROK cooperation over the last year including through following up to the outcomes of the 21st ASEAN-ROK Summit and activities to implement areas of cooperation under the new ASEAN-ROK Plan of Action (2021-2025), the ASEAN Secretariat said.
Cooperation continues to be strengthened despite the impact of the pandemic, particularly in public health, disaster management, education, culture exchanges and connectivity.
The 8th ASEAN-ROK JCC meeting was co-chaired by Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to ASEAN Pengiran Hairani binti Pengiran Tajuddin and Ambassador of the ROK to ASEAN Lim Sungnam. Permanent representatives of ASEAN member dtates and the Deputy Secretary-General for ASEAN Political Security Community also attended.
The meeting highlighted the close ASEAN-ROK cooperation and ROK’s support for ASEAN and ASEAN member states in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, including the ROK’s provision of medical supplies and equipment to ASEAN member states and its contribution to the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund.
ASEAN welcomed the ROK’s New Southern Policy Plus that aims at further advancing ASEAN-ROK relations in line with the three pillars of ASEAN community. Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in various areas, including trade and investment digital economy tourism, disaster management, public health, smart cities and innovation, connectivity, capacity building and human resource development. Cooperative activities and projects are being implemented with support from the ASEAN-ROK Cooperation Fund.
