ASEAN foreign ministers re-affirm climate pacts, look forward to regional centre

Azlan Othman

ASEAN foreign ministers on Friday re-affirmed commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement in the joint-communique for the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Phnom Penh.

The ministers also welcomed the adoption of the Glasgow Climate Pact at the UNFCCC COP26 in the United Kingdom.

The ministers recognised the importance of enhancing cooperation in areas such as capacity-building, and the provision of climate finance by developed countries, for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the Glasgow Climate Pact.

The ministers also look forward to the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change (ACCC) in Brunei Darussalam towards enhancing climate change coordination and cooperation among ASEAN member states for climate resiliency and a low carbon future.

The ministers also look forward to the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UNFCCC in November.
