THE High Court yesterday adjourned a case involving a local man who allegedly torched the Bangunan Halimatul Saadiah, Gadong in the wee hours of April 4, 2018.
Chief Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong gave time to Haji Ahmad bin Haji Tamin’s defence counsel Rozaiman bin Abdul Rahman who sought to assess the case first.
The Chief Justice also commended Rozaiman’s move on taking up the case pro bono, while encouraging other lawyers to follow suit.
The court adjourned the case to August 20, 2018 and ordered the 57-year-old defendant further remanded at Jerudong Prisons.
DPP Nurul Fitri binti Kiprawi’s charge under Section 436 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22 against the defendant of causing mischief by setting fire to a vendor booth – located on the ground floor of the building, sometime between 2am and 3am on April 4, 2018 with the intention to cause total obliteration – carries a penalty of life in prison.
