Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) has taken the initiative of establishing a UNISSA’’s Book Corner at selected Arabic schools, to disseminate research findings and scholarly publications across the country.
The effort is one of several UNISSA undertakings in distributing its publications as collections and reference sources for Arabic school libraries.
The initiative also promotes intellectual engagements among students and teachers.
UNISSA Rector Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal presided over UNISSA’’s Book Corner launch.
He said in his speech, “Due to advances in current technology, printed books are increasingly being dismissed and neglected.
“These days, digital books are very popular and much preferred, because of the profits they bring to the writer and publisher. Even the distribution of books is gradually decreasing with time, owing to the lack of printed books.
“There is no denying the importance of digital books to the growth of information distribution, in keeping with readers’ tastes, but this does not mean that printed books should be overlooked and disregarded.”
Dr Haji Norarfan presented 197 book titles to Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls’ Arabic Religious Secondary School (SUAMPRIPAHS) Principal Hajah Azizah binti Haji Mohamad and Hassanal Bolkiah Boys’ Arabic Secondary School (SMALHB) Acting Principal Hajah Mariana binti Haji Jamil.
The contributed books cover several subjects and disciplines in Islamic studies, legislation, economics, culture, civilisation, Arabic grammar, as well as topics published in Arabic, Malay and English.
The UNISSA’’s Book Corner initiative will also be carried out at other selected schools such as Ma’had Islam Brunei, Rimba Arabic School and Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB).
