Three Brunei Darussalam’s archery coaches of Ar-Rafi Archery Brunei departed for Istanbul, Turkey yesterday to attend a week-long coaching course on traditional Turkish archery.

The group will work with a Turkish archery foundation Ockular Vakfil at the Yunus Emre Institute from February 13-22.

Spearheading the delegation is Chairman of Ar-Rafi Archery Brunei Pengiran Haji Radno bin Pengiran Haji Mohd Tahir.

Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Brunei Darussalam Mehmet Suat Akgun was present to see off the group at the Brunei International Airport.

He hopes the course will improve the coaches’ abilities to train young archers in Brunei.

Meanwhile, the ambassador also told reporters that traditional Tukish archery used to be a popular sport, but has declined in popularity until the establishment of Ockular Foundation.

He also explained that the coaches will not only learn archery techniques but also gain insights on the tradition, culture and the way of life of the Turkish people.
