THE High Court recently rejected an appeal by a man who had asked for more time to settle a BND242,000 fine imposed on him for possessing contraband cigarettes and alcohol.
Chief Justice Dato Paduka Steven Chong denied the application by Liew Shauw Ming, who pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court on May 19, to evading BND24,000 in duties for possessing 235 cartons of cigarettes and 42 bottles of alcoholic beverages.
Liew, who was given six months to settle the fine, or serve 26 months of imprisonment in default, had sought for more time from the Chief Justice, with an undertaking to sell some property to pay the fine.
“But he was unable to tell the court with any certainty when he would be able to make the payment,” said the Chief Justice.
The Public Prosecutor as respondent was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutors Hajah Siti Mu’izzah binti Haji Sabli and Raihan Nabilah binti Haji Ahmad Ghazali.
